The article was very clear about the difficulty of making the "binary liquid explosive" (said to be part of the plot) explode properly. Extrapolate that to 10 airplanes.. Think of it like this - remember all the fearmongering around Y2K and computers? I'm sure you were as aware as I was that this was a load of crap, but it scared a lot of people to whom computers are mysterious and inscrutable. People know EVEN LESS about chemistry...
