I think he had to go to war. I think that the US's stature had been so badly damaged by the fiasco in Iran and the fiasco in Iraq, that something had to be done. I think that years of stupid diplomacy had made America the Lion with no teeth. That appearance in part is why Bin laden knew he could get away with 9/11. I think that US policy made the US appear like anyone could slap it and it wouldn't retaliate. And I think that instead of going to war and actually fighting a war, the US went in and did more bloody social work. Which is why the American Government gets no respect in the first place.
