Reagan did not end the Cold War. That is a rightwing myth. Yes Reagan deserves a lot of credit, but most of the credit goes to Gorbachev and his liberal activists who risked their lives to take control of the Soviet government and de-militarize its intentions.

Carter also deserves credit for all his expert diplomacy with the Soviet Union (SALT II I think?). So do the Europeans, and especially the Germans. So does the Vatican and the Jews. So does rock n' roll and the 60's revolution which made young Russians cry out for freedom. The Beatles in particular for singing "Back in the USSR". So does Lech Valensa and the Baltic State rebels who risked their lvies. And ironically so does Osama Bin Laden and his Mujeheddin who defeated the Soviets in Afghanistan and made Russians think twice about anymore fruitless attempts at empire building.
