It is usually a byproduct of electoral success which quickly leads to arrogant governance and a descent back into self-defeating self-absorption. Both parties in the US and the major parties in Britain do the same thing. Probably France and Germany too to a lesser extent but I don't follow their political ping-pong in that much detail. In Croatia, the HDZ hardliners ruled when I served there in 1992-1995, were bounced by the liberals several years later and regained power in the next election when the liberals proved equally inept at governing. Goes around and comes around.....
