Hi michael97123; Re: "As far as the above statement--you do know that the above goal includes driving the jews out for the true believers. You think Israel is going to rely on the good will of hizbolla, hamas, iran, syria, al quaeda etc. to prevent some sort of genocide."

First of all, "driving out" and "genocide" are two different things. Second, it's not that I'm saying that Israel is "going to rely on the good will" of anyone. The white South Africans didn't "rely on the good will" of the people who turned tires and gasoline into horrible ways to kill. A lot of them left, and the rest of them got ready. When the result wasn't as bad as they feared, a lot of them stayed.

Re: "You compare it to South Africa. How about comparing it to Hutus and Tutsis?"

If Israel did fall to a military attack it could be fairly bad, but soldiers do follow orders. Far worse for Israel would be to fall to guerillas or rioting locals. The whole reason for negotiating a surrender is to avoid this sort of thing.

What Hitler did in Germany in 1945 was to keep the country fighting despite the obvious fact that she was beaten. The result was that large numbers of people were killed and a lot of things destroyed. I read somewhere that a substantial fraction of the civilians in Berlin killed themselves in the face of the Russian attack there. Hitler didn't care what happened to the German people. If the German people failed, as far as Hitler was concerned, they could die. I think the Israeli leaders care about their people.

Re: "Slowing the iranian process down given your somber appraisil makes some sense."

As long as we are going down the Israeli wish list, why don't we have them also eliminate the nukes in Pakistan? Why stop there, the Israelis should hunt down bin Laden. And it would be good press if they solved the world hunger problem.

Militarily, the problem with stopping Iran's nuke program is that the area has already seen the use of military aircraft to halt a nuclear program, that of Iraq. There is no way in hell that the Iranians didn't take notes and figure out countermeasures. From what I'm told, the Iranian program is (a) distributed all over the country, and (b) very deep underground. Facilities like that are kind of hard to slow down. And as I mentioned before, do the Israelis really want a war with a country 50x larger than the Shiite subsection of Lebanon? A country with vast oil wealth? A country that can prevent oil from being sent throuh the straits of Hormuz? (You can bet that Iran took notes from the last time the US beat them up during the tanker wars of the Iran/Iraq war and are better prepared this time.)
