I've had Stegner on my mind for some time, finally got around to reading him when I picked up a copy of his short stories the other day. They are wonderful, I intend to give his non-fiction a whirl next. When he was a professor at Stanford, he cultivated some of our best writers. His students included Edward Abbey, Wendell Berry, Larry McMurtry, and Ken Kesey. I also like the fact that he turned down a National Medal from the NEA in 1992, claiming the agency had become too political.

I like your statement of principles regarding conservation, well said.
