I don't think that the majority care what it is called as long as the rights are given.

Civil rights are a far cry from "basic human rights." (A certain tax deduction is not right up there with liberty and life).

If gays don't care what their partnership is called, the controversy over gay marriage would disappear overnight.

Some same-sex and transgender families consult attorneys to draw up legal documents such as powers of attorney, co-parenting agreements and wills, that will at least permit them to declare who they wish to make health care and financial decisions for them if they become incapacitated; how they wish to share parenting responsibilities or, in the event of a breakup, custody of a child; and what they want to happen to their property when they die. However, these are not a substitute for legal protection under law and cannot provide the broad range of benefits and protections provided by law.

Thank you for making the point that people are already free in our society to make their private legal arrangements any way they wish via powers of attorney, wills, and so forth.

Do you know of a list of which benefits and protections aren't available in this way?

I'd like to know what we're talking about.
