Bush would say I shot them down because they were gonna crash into Bldgs and you wackos would say, bull shit, where the evidence that they were gonna crash into bldgs??? You would accuse Bush of shooting them down because his poll numbers were low.

RE: "How is it then that Osama could count on NORAD and our air defenses standing down on 9/11?"

Actually, the real question is why the attacks were carried out the way they were if it was really something other than an inside job?

For example, let's say you're a terrorist radical bent on death and destruction. You have 4 planes and want to use them to the best effect, and cause the most damage and mayhem possible. If you picked the WTC, which would have close to 50,000 people per building by mid day, what time of day would you hit it? At quarter to 9, before most workers and visitors were at their desks, or more like 10-11 AM when the building was fully occupied? Would you really pick 45 minutes before the stock market opened as the best time to create chaos? And, where would you hit it? Near the top so most of the people in the building could get out, or as close to the bottom as possible? What would a quarter mile tall building do to the neighborhood if it was to tip over sideways, rather than collapse straight down?

While we're at it, let's say you have a plane that is able to get into the air space over DC. Would you carefully maneuver so you could hit a hardened target such as the Pentagon, on the section that had been vacated for renovations, and which was occupied by no one more important than construction workers? Or would you take out that nice big bubble dome on the Capitol Building with Congress in session? What would a fireball made up of a few tens of thousands of gallons of kerosene do to several hundred Congress critters? Would the effect be greater or less than taking out a few hundred construction workers assuming you were a radical terrorist and the sky and planes were yours to command?

One of the biggest smoking guns from 9/11 is how much effort went into minimizing casualties, avoiding VIPs altogether, and leaving historic landmarks alone, while maximizing frightfulness to the common man.

And how about those anthrax letters? 2 went to the 2 guys lobbying for an investigation into 9/11, and 2 went to the media. Whoever sent those 4 letters has never been caught, and in 5 years has felt no need to send any other letters. Very strange behaviour for a psychopathic murderer.

He couldn't.
Osama tried one or two operations every year since the bombing of the embassies in Africa. He was always stopped by the Clinton administration. It's not a question of Osama being smart with 9/11, it's more that Cheney wanted something to happen so he could peg it as the next Pearl Harbor and rally the country. Cheney could count on the American military following directions from the executive, and he could count on Bush Jr. for being clueless and more than willing to let Cheney send out all the directives and orders and hard stuff.
