RE: "Don...if Iraq breaks down completely those oil leases will be worthless. Even if they could pump it they wouldn't be able to guard the pipelines that would transport it."

As close as I can tell, the current situation is that US troops are guarding the pipelines and their puppet government, while keeping the rest of the country so busy with a civil war no one has time to attack oil interests. It seems to me that too much effort has gone into stirring up tension between the two main religious factions since day one for it not to have been the intended result. At a certain point I think it's fair to discount the puff pieces put out by self appointed analysts about how badly everything is going, and look at the administration's unwavering support for those who are making it go that way. If the effect was something other than the one desired, they would have changed tactics a long time ago.

RE: "Saddam's only support for the Palestinians was his P.R. campaign to pay cash to suicide bombers. He couldn't have cared LESS about the Palestinians. He just wanted to keep the fanatics off his back."

While I agree his support of Palestine was pretty superficial, the situation was more one of it being Saddam's way of thumbing his nose at Israel. It was more of a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" sort of a deal.

RE: "As long as he kept stability in his own fiefdom he was happy."

That would seem to be the crime he was guilty of. Unfortunately, stability in the Middle East is not a desirable condition for Israel and their Zionist puppets in DC. The profits from a nationalized oil system alone would make them far too powerful for Israel to live with.
