The polls I have seen have shown self-identified conservatives holding steady around 20-25% of the population for the last several decades.

How long is "the last several decades" exactly? Conservatives used to be very weak in this country. FDR's coalition was solid, and continued well beyond FDR. Eisenhower one the presidency but he really wasn't a conservative. Goldwater had his head handed to him by Johnson. Outside the presidency - The Democrats dominated congress until relatively recently. The conservative movement was very disorganized and weak. The National Review (started in 1955) started to get the conservative movement together but the Democrats still dominated for a long time, and even within the Republican party conservatism wasn't a dominant force until perhaps Regan's run for the presidency.

Do you have a link to your data that you posted several months ago? I can't find it. I do see posts mentioned 20-25% as conservatives, but I don't see any mention of polls.
