If you apply the usual 3-4% margin of error to all those polls, it could be argued there is no significant trend whatsoever, simply the usual random noise with a fixed range. The last five years are interesting because a dedicated group set out to form a majority, had a tailor-made national security threat as a fulcrum and couldn't get it done - quite the opposite. It was either a missed opportunity or proof of what you mentioned, that lasting ideological majorities are not realistic.
