He conflated the Hezbollah action against Israel to be part of "a life-and-death struggle" involving "the entire free world" in its so-called war on terror. He is misguided. Hezbollah's grievance is with Israel, not the West. I agree with Friedman on the lack of "objective context" in the story. The story could have, among other things, discussed the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and subsequent 18-year occupation resulting in the deaths of more than 10,000 civilians, including the internationally condemned atrocity at the Sabra/Shatilla refugee camp (this invasion and occupation gave rise to Hezbollah); most saliently, it could have discussed the near daily Israeli violations of the U.N. monitored Lebanese-Israeli border (according to U.N. reports) leading to occasional deaths as when 15-year-old shepherd Yasuf Rahil was killed by unprovoked Israeli cross-border fire in February. His use of the Geneva Conventions to justify the death of innocents is outrageous. The two core principles of the Conventions are distinction (between combatants and non-combatants) and proportionality Israel has flagrantly violated both in its attacks on Lebanon. Furthermore, it is offensive to claim that Hezbollah seeks to "maximize [civilian] casualties" and thereby imply that they have no regard for life. In point of fact, the Lebanese Red Cross and Human Rights Watch observers found no evidence of rocket launchers (and by extension, Hezbollah) in Qana. The recent crisis, as well as the forgotten war on the Palestinians, was not caused by irrational Arab extremism and hatred. Its genesis lies in injustice, suppressed truth and the doctrine of might makes right. Timothy A. It's like Dubyette not knowing about Shiites and Sunnis until January of 2003.
