They have an enormous amount of restrictions already in place, and they, or at least their ideas, get quite a lot of favorable coverage when dealing with issues like drilling in ANWR.

Yes when they show individuals they are likely to show the more freakish individuals. News is a show at least as much as it is an attempt to inform. Showing the more wild supporters of an idea is similar to the old "if it bleeds it leads" idea. But the ideas are environmentalists are often treated less skeptically than any claim that some particular environmental restriction might not be necessary.
