CHINA is involved in a government mandated effort to develop its own unique technology for everything that might be patented. It has decided not to open its markets for US and western products based on similar technologies.

Thus China is of little use to US as a trading partner. China uses US to sell all manner of low to medium tech manufactured goods. The benefit the US receives is that China buys US government debt that finances the credit boom that has inflated the price of all manner of US assets (like stocks and real estate. This is a scheme that has a definite time horizon and is unhealthy long term to the US.
