The whole concept was "nanny-ism" --but I think the parent should occupy that role.

Seems to me that the smoking and the violence can be dealt with separately. Just because the cartoon is also violent, which is a problem, doesn't mean that the smoking scenes, which are also a problem, can't be dealt with. Seems to me that deleting a few smoking scenes isn't a big deal relative considering the risk. It doesn't insult the "artistic value" but could be useful in not opening the door to smoking.

Tom and Jerry cartoons are full of violence, known for cats chasing mice with hammers, and a parent might want to consider not allowing kids to watch. That's the parent's role. They are not full of smoking, though, so a parent might not know to intervene.

I think cartoon smoking probably has a huge effect at least on a subliminal level, preparing the ground for later smoking. The cuter and more familiar you make smoking, the more likely kids are to do it. What's cuter than a cartoon?

.........

Did you see this one? You think children are less easily influenced than teens?

commonsensemedia.org

"Of every 100 adolescents who tried smoking, 38 did so because they saw smoking portrayed in movies, said the report published in the November issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics"

Some parents don't want to do their job but would rather point fingers. Many kindergarten and first grade teachers will tell you the same thing.

I wonder if those who complained about Tom and Jerry cartoons have lodged similar complaints about the endless stream of violent and sexual music videos and the multitude of Xbox/Sony etc. videos filled with violence sex. I wonder if they have lodged complaints about the gratuitous sex and violence in the movie and television industry.

Then there is the condom education in schools. That has really worked to prevent pregnancy in the USA.

It is both interesting and fascinating how quickly the UK government office reacted to this series of complaints. If they have the power, one might think that is what they should be doing in the first place. But, maybe they are like the FCC - express concern and issue fines after the fact.
