"an abstract game of chess, whose color would you choose -- the US or Iran?"

In the long term Iran horse wins.

1) India and China need their gas and oil.

2) Europeans need their market for their goods and services

3) The mass that supports the Iranian clique won't change their mind any time soon.

As a result the only option is for the US to accommodate the Iranian clique. But -as TJ keep saying- that's not the way those things are solved.

And he may be right:

Look to the puerile situation the US has with Cuba, which is much smaller, doesn't have oil, doesn't have military might...

Bush knows his position will only weaken over time.

The analogy is the British/French in 1933 - 34 -35. Hitler could have been stopped easily at that time, perhaps without bloodshed.

At this time (1 - 2 yr window) Iran can be stopped -- at great cost -- but it can be stopped. IMHO it would require nukes. Perhaps more than one.

At great cost:

1. Would make US pariah.
2. Would totally destroy US$
3. Could create lots of pissed off folks down wind.

But would effectively remove bomb from Iranian religious wacko set.

Only question: Does bush have power and inclination to do this?

I think he has the inclination.
