No comparison. The entire US infrastructure is built on a distribution system for gas. That's an incredible barrier to entry that no small company can hope to overcome. The only hope outside of the government is a complete game changer like electric cars that get 350 miles per charge, cost under $20K, and can be plugged into a standard outlet. If the government can spend several hundred billion to kick start several industries that get us off the oil, it will be VERY well worth it for the US economy and all of us who live here.

If you want to think of it from an economic standpoint, this is exactly where gov't spending can help...kick starting new industries. In addition, if the US gov't wants to have a hope of increasing tax revenues, one darn good way to do it would be to make US companies MUCH more profitable by helping the US get off of oil and patent the IP around new car propulsion systems that don't use gas. That would be one hell of a return on investment that would keep on giving for many many decades.
