re: I'm wondering if we're hoping for too much with "energy independence." It's a noble goal, but pragmatically what's that going to get us?

1. Reduce the trade deficit by 33%.
2. Reduce the cost of oil (commodities trade at the margin of supply demand, a large decrease in demand would lower the cost dramatically).
3. Better mileage would reduce the absolute dollars spent on gasoline which, coupled with the lower cost per gallon, would act as a large economic stimulus.
4. We would reduce our funding of the bad actor governments in the Middle East.
5. Frankly, without the oil threat we wouldn't even give a shit about the Middle East. It becomes "non-strategic".
6. Lowered air pollution and subsequent health care costs.

That's a start.
