OT I wonder what the context was, of when he said that.

He was referring to the ability of consumers to copy or resell content.

You can't resell your iTunes can you? Another reason I'm not interested.

The problem with the music industry is not that consumers refuse to pay for content, the problem is that the existing infrastructure of the recording industry is basically a collusive monopoly that extorts consumers and cheats artists.

I agree with much of what you've said here with small exceptions. Marilyn Manson really understands the economy/accounting of the business. I'm very familiar with his organization because a friend of mine used to do his keyboard programming.

Manson is more CPA than artist. He has a very large organization, hairdressers, costume people, special effects people, programmers. He even has a guy who checks eBay daily for unlicensed content. It's pretty big. He hires help as cheaply as he can including his musicians who get far less than you might think. Manson himself gets most of it.

It's a little naive of some artists to think they are going to get the glory glamour job AND the money too.

My opinion is that some new recording artist should partner with a FILM artist and promote themselves that way and skip the recording labels entirely.

Many of them are. Stan Ridgeway (Wall of Voodoo) is a case in point. He does a lot of soundtrack work. He also tries to distribute his own music via businesses like CD Baby.

He has it kind of right but I believe there is a glaring hole in the business. A significant demography is being ignored in the rush for the cash flow money.
