Lizzie, No reason you can't have normal phone service along with VoIP on an iPhone. For traveling salespeople a phone with both would pay for itself fairly quickly.

Or am I missing something.

I think the iphone is a VoIP phone and I think this ad (below) is real.

I think the Apple VOIP phone is real but I don't think that image is it. It looks too much like a conventional cell phone and has design departures relative to what Apple has historically done. (I sure hope Apple will do better than that.)

Most phony apple ads don't look real like this. This looks real.

You'd be surprised how many fakes (some better than others, sometimes disclosing that they are speculation/concepts) have been proposed over the years... here are a few examples:

youtube.com
engadget.com
gizmodo.com

Some will say VoIP phones aren't worth releasing, but contrary to popular belief I think VoIP phones will start to gain on traditional carriers quickly now that city wide wifi is becoming a reality.

Agreed. Skype, Vonage, etc. are already proving that and it's just a matter of time before handheld devices follow.

Lizzie,

What makes this phone look "real" is that it's not totally touch screen! This looks pretty usuable IMO.
