In a way, he was lucky. Of those who weren't shot down and ended up in German POW camps, something like 80-90% were killed before hitting the magic 25. And many of the crew who vailed out were killed by German civilians wjen they reached earth. Like here, a lot of the bases are closed. A few remain. It is being overrun and it is politically incorrect according to many to notice it. I noticed many of the Brits who commented to us about it looked around first to see who was in hearing range. A sad end to a great culture and a great people.
