It is just that every wine I have personally tried with a bottle cap can only be described as abominable. Snobbery has nothing to do with it. Taste has everything to do with it. If you have enough pride to make a good wine, you have enough pride to put a cork on it.

My favorite liquor store is full of great wines with regular corks for less than $20.

Actually I have also had bad experience with the synthetic corks.

I just looked through my (very small) collection and discovered a New Zealand Stoneleigh 2003 Pinot Noir with a bottle cap bought for $15.99:

Should these bottle cap wines be stored upright?
