Actually, this is not true.

In politics, the majority rules. Often, IMHO the majority is wrong. You are left with the consequences.

An example of this is Ron Paul of Texas. For hard money.

I am a petty politician in a small town in the Western US. My experience is that most times folks can not be bothered to get involved in government. The only time they do is if they are pissed off about something that directly effects them.

The rest of the time they can not be bothered to learn about or become involved with local issues.

Regardless of the correctness of individual attitudes or votes, what matters is the will of the majority members of the elected body.

Look at the pre ww2 parlements and government of Brittan for example of majority rule government leading folks to disaster, in spite of a members vocal opposition to folly (Churchill).

Some politicians are bad and corrupt.

Some are foolish and unable or unwilling to anticipate the future.

Some really care, and are doing their best, but are unable to swing the majority their way.

Unfortunately, above the level of municipal government, the party system kicks in, as well as political contributions. Then (if you are not self financed) you have to find someone who shares your views and is willing to contribute -- or worse, pander to those who can and will fund you.

So far, in my case, that has limited me to local office only.
