Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesman, said the company doesn't expect the recall to have a material financial impact on the company. He noted that the problems don't affect recent models that come with chips from Intel Corp.--only machines using Power PC chips, a technology that Apple is phasing out.

Mr. Dowling said the company discovered certain Sony batteries "do not meet Apple's standards for safety and performance." He added, "Our No. 1 priority is to recall and replace the affected batteries free of charge."

Users can get details about the affected computers and how to exchange batteries at www.apple.com/support/batteryexchange.
