Using "months supply" to measure inventory is totally meaningless.

As an example, in the Northern Trust chart, the inventory level was sky high at close to 14 months. However, interest rates were in the teens and no one can afford to buy anything back then, so the sales were practically non-existent back then. Since it was an interest rate hurdle, it was definitely a nationwide slow down.

Comparing that to current conditions is comparing apples to oranges.
