virus and software bugs are nonexistant in apple

Yeah that's the point. Trouble shooting a PC is way way harder for a non techie due to the fact that the errors can be due to so many more things. Especially if your admin is your ex boyfriend who's not... better not go there.

And especially if you don't listen to your boyfriend and insist on using Explorer or AOL instead of Firefox.

Apple's are so easy to admin in comparison. Since you are newer to the platform:

I keep my Mac healthy by having two boot drives. One is a cloned backup. But the point is I can boot to the backup and run DiskUtility. (And DiskWarrior.) Booting to safe mode on a PC to fix it is like trying to paint the floor you're standing on.

PCs have no equivilent of DiskUtility that I know of. And it's such a hassle to get a PC to dual boot, or partition a drive. I always tell new Mac people to create a seperate partition right at the start so they can dual boot. It's a no brainer if you start that way.

just remember that these various hardware problems are equally likely to show up on the macs, since everybody uses the same contract manufacturers and the profit margins are too low for adequate burn in anymore.

On a new system, I agree completely. As the systems age, it's been a different story in my experience. My Mac systems tend to wear better on average than my PC's (5+ years for my Macs vs. 2 or 3 for PC's)

Lizzie,

It's a tough call IMO. Apple Macs have been revered for lasting and lasting and lasting; almost like the Energizer Bunny. Thing is that now that Apple has attained price parity with the Wintel world, well what do you know, hardware reliability has come down too, to match the Wintel world, almost. Nothing's free, I guess. This story about the batteries is primarily a fault of Sony but just as much a fault of Apple who didn't test the crap out of the batteries. This has been a pretty bad year for Sony who just seems to get hit with a pie everytime they say things are looking up.
