LOL ... yes there is a lesson there.

That is the problem with letter grades, especially like getting an 'A'.

I told you about my daughter's test report the other day. But I didn't tell you the unsuccessful first attempts at getting an assessment done. ... First I took her to this uppity private school that specializes in acceleration and they offered to test her for free.

They gave one test and said she topped out at 5th grade and 6th month. They were all excited and waiting for me to sign a check to start the enrollment procedure. NO'O! What does topped out mean, I asked? After they explained that it means she didn't miss any at the end of the test, I said instrument hasn't measured anything. So they gave another test which showed her at the 7th grade 2nd month and she topped out again. They were even more excited but I wasn't and it was an entire day of testing. We left and did not enroll. When I took her to a qualified educational psychologist, I finally got a report that provided me with thorough information that I can deal with.

When I see an 'A' on the report card with no comments I feel the same way. I don't know what was learned if anything and I don't know what to do with that information.

Even worse, when a child is given an inflated 'feel good' grade that does not mark true achievement and promoted, the next teacher has to take a child who is less prepared to learn new material than the records report. If the next teacher grades the child fairly it appears like the child is falling apart even if they are making consistent progress.

Growth is the only thing that should be measured. No one need ever 'feel bad' about growth, regardless of how it compares with the normed standards. The self esteem manipulators are fraudulent and more damaging than helpful.
