Toshiba to Build Microsoft's Zune...

Microsoft Corp.'s rival to the popular iPod music player, the Zune, will feature an FM tuner, wireless networking capability and be manufactured by Japan's Toshiba Corp.

Toshiba disclosed the information, along with some details about the much-anticipated device's features, in a filing with the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday.

The filing said the Zune, which Microsoft has said should be released before the holiday season, will have wireless networking capability where people can receive and share photographs as well as music. The device will allow users to stream music to up to four other nearby devices.

A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the information in the filing but declined to elaborate further. Toshiba officials weren't immediately available to comment.

According to the filing, the Zune player will have a 30 gigabyte hard drive, three-inch screen and built-in FM tuner. Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod does not come with an FM tuner but customers can buy an after-market add-on that picks up radio channels.

In a major shift in its digital-entertainment strategy, Microsoft confirmed last month that it planned to make a line of digital-music and video players under the Zune brand. But the company has provided few details about the product. The software company is also expected to create an online store that will be tightly integrated with the device and rival Apple's iTunes.

>>this thing is Zune? Its as big as a Buick<<

Lizzie -

If they're including wireless capabilities, they have to make the thing bigger to accommodate a bigger battery. This is a case of an engineering choice that is driven by marketing, I would say. Adding needless wireless features to differentiate the product, necessitating an increase in size.

I can already hear this product barking.
