My first stock was North American Asbestos, which I bought in 1962. Second was Kerr Addison Mines which I bought in the same year. Both were bad buys for different reasons. Kerr was determined to drop their share price, which they did from 13 dollars, (my buying price) to 7.45 for several years.. North American Asbestos I finally figured out from their announcements had no intention of finding an asbestos mine, and I announced to my father that they were "living off the avails of the shareholders". It was the start of my promoter education. I later announced to a fellow who would later become a Veep of Cominco that he was wasting his time working on a geology PhD as mining people did not need that kind of education. My exact words to him were, "what are you doing that for (working on a doctorate), it's only mining". I was of fairly tender years.. namely 11 to be exact.. He replied, "I have found in this business, that until you get a PhD, nobody listens to you." I forget the name of the motel he was staying in, but all the other details are clear. He also made a decision at that time, not to pursue a career as a competitive skier, (he was very good) as mining exploration took way too much time to indulge in other pursuits.. sort of like farming.. you can't do anything else...

I came to understand he wished to win arguments by authority, thereby saving a lot of work convincing people of uncertain theses and allowing the work to go ahead to prove them. This sort of strategy about fooling people into thinking you are sure and they are foolish, is a valid method of getting your way. He was at that time working on a 29 mile long uranium-niobium orebody of about 0.1% uranium and some tenor of the other metal. It was found to be too fine grained to be economic. Under a lake and fairly narrow, it was extensively drilled but will probably never be mined. Inspiration was the company.

One of our present promoters not only remembered North American Asbestos, but knew the people who ran it quite well. That is what I like in a company. People with experience and pedigree.
