Iranian Nobel Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi said on Thursday that she recently received death threats. Ebadi, a well known lawyer and rights activist, was the first Muslim woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

Shirin Ebadi said she has been accused of anti-revolutionary and anti-Islamic activities in an unknown received e-mail.

Five weeks ago the Iranian government outlawed one of the associations chaired by Ebadi.

A campaigner for human rights and equal opportunities for women in Iran, the 59-year-old jurist was the first female judge in her country, serving as president of the Tehran city court from 1975.

With the advent of the Islamic Republic in 1979, however, she was forced to resign after authorities banned women from such posts.
