Which is why, no matter how much people complain, I will NEVER surrender, nor apologize for, my belief that democratic values, manifested in a free and fair electoral process, and safeguarded by a free and fair press, is the only means of legitimate government.

Fine, and I pretty much agree with you. But the topic was how involved the USA should be in the ME, not what you think is a legitimate government.

The problem of course is the tyranny of the Majority. If the majority of the voters want to live under Sharia law, the minority suffers. In order to be democratic religion must be a matter of personal choice and not a matter for the state.
