I don't think so, Bill. If the country comes apart, we'll be out of there quick, as distasteful to us as it might be. What President could afford to stand by the Kurds if Iraq partitioned? It would be bloody civil war, and the call to bug out would be loud and broadcast 24/7 by our networks, IMO.

I don't think we could stop it. All Iraq's neighbors would be jumping in with both feet, including Turkey. I think Turkey's near-interests would trump any concern for EU membership. An independent Kurdistan is a tremendous threat to them.

If the country partitions, I will be very pessimistic.
