The fact remains that the United States is in deep trouble in the Middle East, and it will not be able to develop effective policies if it is impossible to have a civilised discussion about the role of Israel in American foreign policy.

Excellent article, Rich. To those not aware, Mearsheimer and Walt are highly respected academics who wrote a research paper challenging the logic of the special relationship that Israel has with the United States in its foreign policy, and this was of course a response to those attacking their paper. We in Canada do not need this "special relationship" with Israel either. On a personal note I prefer to avoid special relationships with people when they are one-sided and only get me in trouble.
