Hawk....you STILL didn't speak to my Alabama scenario.

When you talk about democracy you are talking about OUR democracy. You mention "freedom of the press". What if the people of a country didn't WANT the press to be absolutely free? What if they didn't want the press to print ANYTHING objectionable to their religious beliefs?

The men that put our Constitution together were "secular" men. They appreciated religion but were not bound by it. They were also highly traveled and erudite men. We were LUCKY as a country to have our revolution and formation come at a time when religion was not so much a factor in political opinion. Had our democracy been formed 40 years earlier or 40 years later, our Constitution might have been very very different.

So....to try and fit the Middle Eastern country "pegs" of today in the "holes" of 1770 U.S. may not quite work.
