I found The Things they Carried deeply moving. I read it with my son. I think the great war writers are all intense and sad- I don't think war can be anything else but intense and sad. I don't think it's intense and sad when you are in the middle of it- too much adrenalin for that, but in the end when people are dead, or dying, or wounded, I don't think it can be anything else.
