I think Mqurice thoroughly covered that donation topic in his previous post - I can donate my kidney to science - but I can't sell my kidney and keep the proceeds or have the proceeds go to my kid - again why not - why can't I OWN my kidney and do what I want with it? Why does the gubbment own my kidney? I thought we lived in the land of the free?

One of my friend is a doctor. She gave me an example of what happens in US: A Gynecologist doctor told a 37 year old female that she could be having cancer because she was feeling cramps in her stomach (scare mongering). In the operating room, the doctor forgot to do preliminary testing to validate the cancer. Instead, the doctor proceeded to "treat" for cancer. So he chopped of the left ovary and send it for "confirmation" for cancer. The result was negative! Then, the idiot chopped off the right ovary!! That also turned negative!! Now this women will have to go through menopause so early, no more babies etc. Essentially, this whole operation was unnecessary. But the worst part is this: After the operation, the doctor told the patient - "The good news is you dont have cancer"!!

My friend tells me that, a doctor can easily get anyone to undergo any operation at anytime or forgo it as well!! Like, if a Ob-Gyn doctor doesnot want to be disturbed at night, he will let the patient go through the labor pain through the night and then let the patient go for C-Section next day (this happens especially if the patient doesnt have insurance)!!

The point I'm trying to make is that, you are fighting for the rights of individuals to sell their body. But who is fighting for the rights of the sellers to be well informed? How do you know that the poor Indians are well informed of their decisions? It is all right if someone is willing to work like slave (for say, food and shelter). But what if the "slave" is misinformed that the work involves jumping into "death"? It is always easy to scaremonger those Indians to not to donate kidneys (If the so called well educated Americans can be told, the good news is no cancer!!). How do you know that the donors are "rightly" informed about the contract they are signing into? Are the donors told that "if you lose the other kidney after donation, it will be worse and costly than starvation"?

i.e The govt has created an "opinion" among the population that "doctors" are the ONLY people to give these medical advices!! In reality, that is not true (for example, a Chemist who makes the drug is many times more knowledgeable about the disease/drug than a doctor). Even a high school graduate can be trained to provide some medical information. Walmart can be allowed to open medical centers. But why is this not allowed? The all mighty government does NOT allow, medical education to be preached to any one other than "doctors" and guarantees special "rights" to doctors (like prescription rights). In other words, you need to fight for the right to medical information - This can happen only if there is free market in "medicine". You can NOT fight for one side of the bargain (i.e right to sell organs) and ignore the lack of "free medicine" i.e right to information. If the "information" was very clear and established, we wont be having this discussion. I even think, if there was "free market in medicine", you dont need a donor in India - You will have one in US - as this free market would have helped the better use of dying organ donors.
