You can get in still on family reunion. They put your case in line for 8+ years before even looking at it. I've been on a student visa (F), exchange visa (J), work visa (H) over the last 16 years 9 of which were spent in the US. Applied for a green card 3 years ago and waiting. My lawyer was told I was approved a couple of years back (don't even think about applying without a lawyer). Once that is done wait another 5 years to become a citizen. If I am lucky my H1-B won't run out before I get the green card. Have a little less than 2 years to go on it. Then I will be in the strange position of being a tenured professor without a visa :)

In Australia if they give you permission to immigrate (which seems pretty speedy) you can become a citizen in 2 years. Illegals are deported unless they can claim asylum.
