On some level children know the warm cocoa they are drinking brings a message with it ... "we don't believe in you, but here is something to make you feel good." The playing field is not only not level, they may be on separate planets. Relatively speaking, some kids get to the playing field with four strikes on them. They may have health issues, not the right skin color, on the lower end of the bell curve, no family support, and quite possibly a whole bunch of other negatives. All the high minded talk about lifting boot straps and personal responsibility is fine in the proper place, but here warm cocoa is where you have to start.
