I think that the occasional rude gesture can be appropriate, under the circumstances, especially if done in a jocular, good-natured way. A way of reducing conflict rather than increasing it.

My husband and I make jocular rude gestures to each other -- my favorites are hissing like a cat, and sticking my hand on top of my head and raising my fingers in imitation of a crested or spined lizard raising the spines on its head as a warning signal.

He's more likely to give me the middle finger with a flourish of some type.

With other members of the family, I am more likely to make growling noises, and they growl back. My mother and I were just growling at each other last night, joking growls, "grrrrrrr!"

We're feeling rather stressed these days.
