That's an interesting way to look at it. I've seen a couple of other movies which were tailored for very small audiences- and you're right, it's either great, or it leaves you cold.

I also agree with you about the dialog. It's strange (for me) to see "foreign" movies, with "foreign" characters, speaking English- unless they would naturally be speaking English. It takes me out of the movie, and ruins my suspension of disbelief.
