on second thought, I think the weakness today is a little more than just a silly rumor.

Intel formally annouced the Merom today, and there was probably speculation that Apple would co-announce, since Apple is just rolling out the new ads. But apple was nowhere in the PRs, Dell was, but only on a boutique item.

Personally I don't like companies preannouncing product they can't ship en masse, Dell can afford to do with with their huge product mix but for apple, it would kill them. I expect a Merom in a week or two, probably the Macbook Pro, and then the mini update to something.

PC Magazine Labs' lead analyst for notebooks, Cisco Cheng, put the Core 2 Duo mobile processors to the test in actual shipping systems. Two of those systems, the Alienware Aurora m5550 and Dell XPS M1710 (Core 2 Duo), are gaming machines that offer the 2.33-GHz mobile Core 2 Duo CPU. The XPS M1710 retains the gaming laptop crown it earned in its previous iteration with the mobile Core Duo CPU (codenamed "Yonah") with significant performance gains on our tests. Unfortunately, as Cisco found, battery life suffered a little, lasting just 2 hours and 23 minutes.
