Exxon's making large profits because oil makes a lot more economic sense for powering cars, then wind mills or solar cells.

Over time if oil becomes rarer and more expensive, and alternate technologies (with for example wind power only being a very small part of the solution) becoming more ready and efficient, oil will become less and less of a factor.

But over time means generations. Try to do it quickly and you do massive economic damage.
