Whoops, case of the stoopids. Just realized I've been looking at the 1973 low all this time...

I really think the key problem here with expecting the four-year cycle low to have much significance is that you're expecting the presidential election cycle to be the dominant feature of the economic landscape. I don't think there's any avoiding the importance of the housing bubble, and that's marching to the beat of a slightly different drummer.
