I would submit the neocons really wanted a docile client state in Iraq with huge US bases, democratic protesters in the streets of Damascus and Iran that would bring down those regimes without our firing a shot, and seeing Islamic radicalism recede to an irrelevant fringe in the Arab world as pro-US regimes came to the fore everywhere. Lovely dream. What it has to do with reality, well, that is very limited.
