Homer was more historian than poet.
NOOOO. Homer was more poet than historian. Or do you REALLY believe the Greek gods took sides and interfered in that fight? :-)

We beat that horse to death last year. <g>
The matter is still open. There is no archaeological evidence that proves the Trojan War ever occurred. And if did, there is no proof that the place called "Troy" in Turkey was the site of that war. There is severe lack of evidence.

As far as Homer is concerned, if Turkey's Troy WAS the site, he really did execute poetic license. He gives the impression of a large, bustling city-state. In fact, the ruins know called Troy are rather small- -a few hundred yards across. There are many much less well known sites that are much larger. Something doesn't fit here- -literally.

Trojan War aside, there is little doubt there was a thriving Bronze Age civilization that came to an abrupt end due to some sort of catastrophe.
Yes, there was. Mycenae was certainly part of it, along with Knossos on Crete. There was bustling trade. And something ended it quickly, possibly the very violent explosion of the Santorini volcano, which appears to have brought Minoan civilization and the city state of Thera to an abrupt end, possibly giving rise to the Atlantis myth. There are other theories, though, such as invasion by the Sea People (probably the Carthaginians or Palestinians).
