So is the US the only country that does this or is it pretty well standard? I can't see russia for instance allowing a foreign power try their soldiers. Partly because of the nature of the military, which has it's own courts and justice system. I don't believe that even in the US that the military turns their people over to civilian courts. It seems to me that the soldiers are first liable to the US Military, and then to the Civilian Government. Of course there is also the problem of US citizens watching iraqi courts executing US Military Military personnel. Unless you believe that an Iraqi court would not decide the harshest possible penalty was due to foreign soldiers.
