For what it is worth this is my anecdotal experience with Costco and WalMart. I'll leave out my trading experience which has had both its high and low moments. :-)

When I visit my mom I go to WalMart to shop. There have always been more than enough clerks or sales people to help and to specifically direct you. At least one-half of the check out stands are staffed. Usually about two-thirds of them are.

Costco, in a nearby suburb to where I live, has clerks and few people on the floor. Never has there been more than four check out stands manned in spite of the lengthy lines.

So, from a staffing point, WalMart wins it for me.

Both stores give descent price breaks.

It's almost impossible to get someone like you, who works in the non-profit end of our world, to ever believe these things.

Bill, what is it that you think I don't believe? Are you going black and white on me again? I question one number in one ad. Somehow that means that I don't understand and appreciate the Wal-Mart dynamic? Or that I'm a Wal-Mart "oppo"? What is it that you think I think? Who exactly are people "like me"?

Do you have a counter-argument for the point about the CPI being mostly services? Or do you just want to fuss at people "like me"?

<<The reason Wal Marts oppo is screaming is because they have forced them to lower prices or go out of business. The amazing thing is that the smart ones have found a way to stay in business against them. >>

Two super Walmarts in my area. Each one drew in many small retailers.

1. Is traffic. Might not drive 15 miles to the small retailer but if you're in the area after going to WalMart, why not stop in.

2. Small guys have a better selection. You may buy a small tank and a few fish at WalMart but if you get into them the little guys have it all. Same with Tractor Supply. WalMart has some garden products but TS next door has everything WalMart didn't have.

3. Service. Back to the fish. WalMart sells fish products, small guy sells already treated water.
