Is this the retirement scenario that Brinker ruined?

Just two years ago, it seems as if Retired was doing OK for himself with no complaints. I don't see any mention of those pesky QQQs anywhere nor do they show up in his investments.

Could it be that retired just took a really big gamble on the QQQs looking for some easy money...got burned...and needed somebody to blame?

Anyway here's what he says a couple of years ago...

"Retired young into a BIG Bear market"

Hi,

My wife and I retired in 2000 at ages 53(me) and 47.
We pretty much have to live off of our investments since we were not "retirement eligible" when we escaped the Corporate rat race and we have to fund our own healthcare insurance.

We started retirement, unknown to us, at the start of one of the worst bear markets of my lifetime.

We survived so far by limiting our expenditures to 3.5% of our assets each year. Our allocation today is 30% stock funds, 20% non-traded Wells and CNL REITS paying 7% dividends with no NAV price fluctuation, 10% laddered Corporate Bonds, 40% Stable Value fund in my 401K with my old employer.

My plan is to reach age 59 1/2 and then start living on the Stable Value fund in the 401K. That fund should last 15 years giving the rest of my portfolio, hopefully, time to grow.
It works for us. Your results may not be the same depending on your needs.

I am 57 today and enjoying a pretty stress free life with two nice vacations each year. Oh, by the way, my house is paid for and I moved to a low tax area in Prescott AZ...

Life is a bunch of choices...."
