In my experience, linking one thread to another to draw people's attention to an interesting debate is a useful step on SI.

Using links to jeer and laugh at others is just catty neighborhood gossip snickered over your backyard fence. Granted, a lot of threads on SI thrive on that kind of moronic behavior.
