The problem with the "you have no better alternative" line of reasoning is that it starts from the wrong premise. If the US is on the wrong path, the first step is to say "we are on the wrong path". The next step is to ask "what path should we be on?". So, yes, contenders need to state their ideas and intentions. But when it comes to issues like "should we stay in Iraq or leave Iraq", then you have no real debate about direction, only a endless loop where people hurl accusations back and forth.

Whether we stay or leave Iraq says little or nothing about our foreign policy direction. Charting this direction is the main burden of those who would get us off a path that most now admit is taking us in the wrong direction. Part of the process of changing direction is to change the people behind the steering wheel. Bolton is never going to be a team player at the UN. Cheney is never going to honestly assess the damage done by the invasion of Iraq. Bush is a lameduck. And I cannot for the life of me understand why Rumsfeld still gets a paycheck from the US government.

Having said this, I see little to inspire me from the Democrats, who seem to prefer to hide from the major issues rather than engage them. Hence, I think we should be active as citizens in making it known that we are profoundly displeased with both the Republicans and the Democrats and that we are searching for leaders who can chart a new and hopefully far better course than the one we have been on in recent years.
